History of Halloween, how it all began

You might celebrate it every year, but do you the true history of Halloween? How it all began? Why did it become such a major event, and was able to live through the centuries to the present day? Let’s try and find that out.

If you think Halloween is kind of “young”, let me tell you, it has been around for a very long, long time. Its origins date back to an ancient Celtic festival, over 2000 years ago. Back then, the Celts commemorated the “Samhain” as the day before their new year… the day the spirits of the dead came back to earth, and the boundaries between the living and the dead would blur. In spite of the Roman invasions, and the arrival of Christianity centuries later, the Samhain was never forgotten.

In the 7th century, the Pope designated November 1st, as All Saint’s Day – it is now believed that he was , in fact, trying to replace the “unholy” celtic Samhain with a related, church holiday. That celebration was called All-hallows (from the old English Alholowmesse, meaning All Saints’ Day). As such, it’s eve was called All-hallows Eve, which later became… our own “Halloween”.
